About this programme

An overview of what you will study and build.

Fungal Allergy and Respiratory Health: An Introduction explains how fungal spores and allergens affect the airways. Students learn which fungi produce important allergens and how exposure occurs indoors, outdoors and at work, then explore the main conditions linked to fungal exposure: allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, fungal sensitisation in asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. A module on occupational exposure covers agriculture, composting, woodworking and other industries, and the course concludes with approaches to assessing and reducing exposure.

Respiratory effects of fungal exposure are common but often under-recognised, and practical exposure reduction can make a real difference for workers and residents. This course suits respiratory, occupational and environmental health staff who want a clear grounding in the science and its practical implications. It does not train students to diagnose or treat. Tutors are environmental and occupational health specialists. For the final project, students prepare an exposure assessment and reduction plan for one workplace or residential setting.
